Mighty Armies.
I would like to recommend a new set of rules which have just arrived at Game Kastle and cost only $12. The rules are Mighty Armies Ancients, by Rebel Minis. This follows the original Mighty Armies, a set of HOTT-like rules that Rebel Minis created to generate sales for their 15mm fantasy figures. RM kept the rules inexpensive by keeping all of the inner pages black & white on plain paper, including the photographs.
Much of MAA is like DBA, including dicing for command pips, moving stands singly or in groups, and having armies of about 12 stands. It also has a "DBM" expansion in which each small army becomes a division in a larger army. Combat is pushed back on greater than, and kill on doubling.
But there are differences, and they are important. First, army size is based on points, not stand count. Second, the game uses a Warmaster-style army list that sets minimums and maximums for each unit type. So you can decide how to configure your army. Small and elite, big and trashy. The rules provide 8 sample army lists, plus, there are more on the game web site, but it is mostly DIY.
Another important difference is that movement has been simplified. ALL moves consist of a pivot at the beginning, a straight line, and a pivot at the end. As in FoG and WM, stands then automatically align. There are only four combat modifiers, and no elaborate if this then that table. Evasion is possible. Skirmisher losses do not count towards victory. Shooting ranges are greater and shooting is more lethal. (In DBA it is usually only good for breaking up an enemy's groups).
The rules also come with rather clever campaign rules that create frequent combats for everyone. There are also siege rules. |
